iPhone Video Won’t Play on Windows? Convert MOV to MP4

You copy a video from your iPhone, double-click it on a Windows PC and get an error, sound without picture, or a request to buy a codec. The culprit is HEVC.

Open the MOV to MP4 tool → Free, nothing is uploaded

Why it happens

iPhones record video in HEVC (H.265) inside a .MOV file to save space. Windows needs the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store (usually paid) to play it, and many Android phones, TVs and websites cannot play HEVC at all.

Fix: convert to MP4 with H.264

  1. Open MOV to MP4 and drop the video.
  2. Keep the default quality and click Convert.
  3. The MP4 (H.264) plays on every computer, phone and website.

Videos that are already H.264 are just repackaged — no quality loss and done in seconds.

Prevent it

On the iPhone, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible records H.264 from now on (files are larger).

Frequently asked questions

Will the converted video lose quality?

HEVC videos are re-encoded at high quality, which looks the same on screen. H.264 videos are copied without any loss.

My video plays sideways now — why?

Some players ignore the rotation flag. Use Rotate video and choose “bake into the frames”.
