JFIF file format
JPEG File Interchange Format (.jfif): pictures saved by Chrome or Edge on Windows, with the same JPEG inside as a .jpg file.
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is one of the standard ways of storing a JPEG image — many ordinary .jpg files are JFIF inside. A file only ends in .jfif because Windows sometimes registers that extension for JPEG images, so Chrome and Edge save downloaded pictures as .jfif. The image is an ordinary JPEG, but many upload forms and older programs reject the unfamiliar extension.

Frequently asked questions
What is a .jfif file?
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is one of the standard ways of storing a JPEG image — many ordinary .jpg files are JFIF inside. A file only ends in .jfif because Windows sometimes registers that extension for JPEG images, so Chrome and Edge save downloaded pictures as .jfif. The image is an ordinary JPEG, but many upload forms and older programs reject the unfamiliar extension.
How do I open a JFIF file?
A .jfif file is an ordinary JPEG, so every browser, Windows Photos and most image viewers open it. If an upload form or an older program refuses it, convert it to .jpg (the image data is copied without any quality loss) — or simply rename the extension to .jpg.
Is JFIF lossless?
No, JFIF uses lossy compression: some detail is discarded to make files smaller.
How do I convert JFIF?
Use one of the converters below — they run in your browser, so your images are never uploaded. Most popular: JFIF to JPG, JFIF to PNG, JFIF to PDF.
