How to Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 and 11
iPhones save photos as HEIC, and many Windows PCs cannot open them out of the box. Here are three ways to turn them into ordinary JPGs — from a one-minute browser method to built-in Windows apps.
Open the HEIC to JPG tool → Free, nothing is uploaded
Method 1: convert in your browser (fastest, no install)
- Open the HEIC to JPG converter.
- Drag your HEIC photos onto the page — a whole folder at once is fine.
- Click Download all to get the JPGs in a ZIP.
The photos are converted by your browser on your own PC, so nothing is uploaded. The date taken and camera details are kept; the GPS location is removed unless you choose otherwise.
Method 2: Photos app with HEIF extensions
Windows can open HEIC once two codecs from the Microsoft Store are installed: HEIF Image Extensions (free) and HEVC Video Extensions (usually a small fee; some PCs come with it preinstalled). After installing them:
- Open the HEIC file in Photos.
- Choose … → Save as (or Edit → Save as copy), then pick JPG.
This works one photo at a time, which gets tedious for an entire camera roll.
Method 3: Paint
With the same extensions installed, open the photo in Paint, choose File → Save as → JPEG picture. Again one file at a time.
Stop the problem at the source
On the iPhone, Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible makes new photos JPG. And Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts photos to JPG when you copy them to a computer with a cable. More in how to stop iPhone saving photos as HEIC.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t Windows open HEIC files?
HEIC photos are compressed with HEVC, a patented codec that Windows does not include on every PC. Without the HEIF and HEVC extensions, Windows shows an error or a blank thumbnail.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
At 90% quality (the default in our converter) the difference is practically invisible. JPG files are usually somewhat larger than the HEIC originals.
